Controversy abounds, due to a Deleted screenshot from Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The fact that the image has now been removed everywhere says it all, because its content is not tender. Six (6! Six! Sechs! 六つ!) different types of in-game currency and clear references to a battle pass. And of course, there are plenty of media outlets that stand up for developer Rocksteady Studios; after all, they made the fantastic Arkham games, but when the bosses at Warner Bros. say you have to go in a certain direction, then you should.
After the release of Batman Arkham Knight (2015), the studio has started developing a new game. Soon, rumors started that they were working on a Superman game. But after 2016 came 2017 and soon PUBG, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2 and others came into play. And of course, Rocksteady had to change the plans to “something else”. Superman was cancelled, because they wanted “something” with multiple characters, because then you can add even more cosmetic variables. “Something” with cooperative gameplay. “Something” with online. “Something” with battle passes. “Something” that we are now completely tired of, but yes, in those days it was hip and happening.
And isn’t it crazy that a studio that has put together three fantastic Arkham games can still be creatively muzzled by the men in suits at headquarters? That the studio still doesn’t have the weight to just say: “big bye, don’t call us, we want to make Superman, call Ubisoft if you want redeemable gameplay with coins and battlepasses and paid acceleration tricks”.
As cool as the cutscenes shown are (because they are), a game in the spirit of the Arkham games simply can’t go together with six different in-game currencies. And of course we’re going to play it and if I’m wrong I’ll rectify that with love (with love, because then it might be a good game), but trust me: Suicide Squad will be Suicide Service
