Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is officially available from today, although we were able to get our hands on the single-player via early access last week. You have been able to read more about this in our Special, in which we point out that it’s entertaining in itself, but that the developer makes it very easy for himself by recycling content.
Now that the rest of the game is available, we can dive back into the multiplayer and the new Zombies mode, and of course you can expect a review next week. In the meantime, some more information about the development has come out. As it turns out, the game was made in just 16 months.
In an article by Jason Schreier on Bloomberg It can be read that most games have a development time of around 3 years, but that this game was produced in less than a year and a half. This makes it the shortest development for a new volume ever.
Initially, the campaign was also pitched as an expansion, but this has been transformed into a full sequel. Internally, there was talk of an expansion, but also of a new premium release, so it was not always clear to the developers what it would be.
Activision, for its part, denies that there has ever been any talk of an expansion, but it’s easy to see through that. The campaign is short and consists partly of Warzone assets, the multiplayer contains classic maps and for the Zombies mode they also use assets that are used elsewhere.
On top of that, the high pressure to finish the game on time has led to crunch, with some developers having to work through the evenings and weekends to meet the deadline. This while the developers at Sledgehammer Games were promised after Call of Duty: Vanguard that this would never happen again.
Given that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is getting a lot of negative reviews, the game’s content is debatable for a full release, it feels like Schreier is right. Meanwhile, studio head Aaron Halon tries to do some damage control with the following statement:
“From the start of development, we have all been laser focused on creating the next groundbreaking Call Of Duty game. Long before we wrapped up our previous game, we heard loud and clear from fans about the desire to stay and play together for longer within the same series.
And that’s what we delivered – the first true sequel in franchise history. It is also why we added features like Carry Forward for the first time to honor the investment our players have made in the Modern Warfare series.
We’re proud to be the team to lead the way on Modern Warfare III. We have worked hard to deliver on this vision which has been years in the making. Anything said to the contrary is simply not true – this is our game and we cannot wait to play it online with all of you.”
So the reports are contradicted, but the reviews so far tend to be right about Jason Schreier who of course spoke to developers and internal sources. Nevertheless, the shooter is now available and you will soon read whether you like the total package as indicated in our review.
