With The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo brought a sequel to Breath to the Wild, an exception. Nintendo doesn’t normally make sequels within this franchise, but the first game provided enough foundation to continue building on that.
With success, because Tears of the Kingdom was very well received. The follow-up question now is what Nintendo is going to do with the franchise, will there be another sequel to this game or will they do something completely new. The latter seems the most likely.
In an interview with Game Informer Aonuma and Fujibayashi have indicated that a sequel would be a bit too much. In Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo has pulled everything it can out of it when it comes to the world and the experience. Nintendo sees that game as the most complete form of the Zelda games.
“We were seeking to build on top of the world we created with Breath of the Wild, and really exhaust the possibilities of what we could put into that world.”
“I don’t think that we’ll be making a direct sequel to a world such as that that we’ve created.”
His last sentence says it all. Although it is not out of the question that there will be another sequel, the chances are very small. This implies that the next Zelda game will have a new, fresh approach.
